For Big Brother’s birthday last year we decided to buy him a Nintendo DS. Finding games that are appropriate for a 5 year old and easy for them to play has been a challenge for us. So when I was given the opportunity to review Poptropica Adventures for Nintendo DS I jumped all over it. Not only is the game rated E for everyone which means it is safe for him to play but I had heard many things about Poptropica.

When the game arrived I gave it to Big Brother to try. It took a few days before he had any interest in playing it. Once he did start playing it I regretted getting it for him. Non stop was “mommy what does this say”, “mommy what does that say” followed by much frustration as he didn’t know what to do. He quickly lost interest in the game and went back to playing another game that he enjoys.

Obviously this wasn’t going to work out for a review and I was left scratching my head on what to do. Then I got a clue and tried the game out myself. Personally I am with Big Brother and do not enjoy the game. I only managed to play it for about 15 minutes then I was fed up of it.

There was a lot of reading and basically running around finding things then finding who they belong to. I easily got lost and had no clue what to do so took to google to find a guide to walk me thru the game.

I came to one conclusion, this game is not for my family. I can see my best friends daughter liking it. She is the one who told me about Poptropica in the first place. She is also old enough to be able to read everything that the characters are asking you to do. So if your kid plays Poptropica online this would be a great game for them. If your child is old enough to read and understand conversational instruction then this would also be a good game for them. However if you child is young like mine then this is not the game for them for a few more years.

  1. Sounds like it would be good for my 8 year old, but not so much for my little man since he can’t read yet. Thanks for the heads up on that.
